Scholarships and stuff...

This is a list of scholarships and other information that has come across my desk. Take a look at it; you may be interested. If you are, stop in to get more info or an application. Don’t wait until the last minute! I’ll be glad to help you decide if you want to apply.

UNO – Music Scholarships

Scholarship auditions will be held Nov. 5th, Dec. 3rd, Feb. 4th and March 2nd. Applications must also be submitted.

 

Fairbury Optimist Club Essay Contest

Open to students in grades 10-12, this essay contest has three levels of competition. The essay topic is: “My Place in a Changing World”.

            Deadline: Jan 18

 

Norma Ross Walter Scholarship Program of the Willa Cather Foundation

Applicants must be prospective first year college women students who have been or plan to be graduated from Nebraska high schools and who plan to continue their education as English majors in accredited colleges or universities. Selection is based on intellectual promise, creativity and character of the applicant.

Amount: $8000                        Deadline: Jan. 31

 

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

To be considered for a freshman scholarship, the applicant must have completed the admission application process and be accepted for admission.

                        Deadline: Feb. 1

 

Union Bank – We Have Money to Learn Scholarship

Students must be in the upper quarter of the class (Hebron students- top 10, CHB-top 3 of all students in your class last year). If you wait until next semester to apply, others may be eligible, some may be ineligible. If you are eligible now, apply now. ACT of 24 or higher is also required. Applications are also available on-line at www.asapubt.com.

Ak-Sar-Ben Ike Friedman Leadership Award

Criteria: talent to inspire others, desire to make a difference, high character, courage to act. Eligibility: high school senior in Nebraska or western Iowa. One time honorarium and award granted.

                        Deadline: Feb. 1

 

Ak-Sar-Ben Leadership College Scholarship

Criteria: leadership, academic achievement, desire for college degree, financial need. Eligibility: Rank in top 50% of graduating class, attend a 4-year school in Nebraska or western Iowa.

Amount: 20-$10,000                        Deadline: Feb. 14

 

NAIFA Scholarship

This scholarship is available to a graduate who wishes to further their education toward a college degree at a Nebraska college or university. Preference will be given to candidates interested in courses of study such as education, business/management/finance, market-ing/sales, or actuarial studies. They should have an above average GPA and demonstrate good character, leadership, and interest in furthering their education.

Amount: $500                        Deadline: Feb 15

 

UNL – Honors Program

Nebraska Honors provides a challenging and creative academic program for the most talented and highly motivated students in Nebraska and across the nation. Students benefit from small classes and a close-knit Honors community that extends outside of the classroom. The Honors Program provides a textbook scholarship. To be eligible, students should have close to a 29 or higher ACT score and be ranked in the top 10-20% of their class.

Nebraska Academy of Sciences, Inc. Scholarship

Six different scholarships are awarded by this organization. They each have their own criteria and application procedures. Get a list of instructions from me.

SCC in Beatrice – Optimist Scholarship

Fill out the application and send it in if you are considering going to SCC in Beatrice. This application should be submitted with the Educational Foundation Scholarship app listed above.

Amount: $500                        Deadline: March 1

 

Maynard Jensen American Legion Memorial Scholarship Program

Applicants must be sons or daughters, grandchildren or great-grandchildren or great-grandchildren, adopted or stepchildren of members of Department of Nebraska, The American Legion or POW, MIA, KIA, or any deceased veteran. They must also be enrolled in a Nebraska post-secondary school.

Amount: $500      Deadline: March 1

 

SCC – Educational Foundation Scholarships

Preference will be given to students who rank in the top 1/2 of their class or who have demonstrated classroom performance that would indicate potential success at SCC. These can be used at any of the 3 campuses.

            Deadline: March 1

 

Ak-Sar-Ben Community College Scholarship

Criteria: leadership potential, academic achievement, desire to earn a degree, financial need. Eligibility: able to demonstrate financial need, accepted for admission or enrolled in an eligible community college, must plan to carry at least 12 hours a semester.

Amount: 12 - $1000                        Deadline: March 20

 

UNL – Alpha Gamma Nu Scholarship

These scholarships recognize young men who are residents of Nebr. for their outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and community involve-ment. They are offered to freshmen males interested in joining the Greek system (joining a fraternity).

Amount: $500                        Deadline: April 15

 

The Holocaust Rememberance Project Essay

A national essay contest for high school students that is designed to encourage and promote the study of the Holocaust. Winning students can win all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C. and scholarships from $500 to $5,000.

American Legion Auxiliary Scholarships

The following scholarships are all from the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA).

Applicants may apply for only one state scholarship and one national scholarship.

Applicants must be veteran connected and a resident of Nebraska.

 


Roberta Marie Stretch Memorial Scholarship

Preference will be given to former Nebr. Girls State Citizens.

Amount: $400                        Deadline: March 29

 

Nurse’s Gift Tuition Scholarship

Must be enrolled in nursing school.

                        Deadline: March 29

 

Student Aid Grant or Vocational Technical Scholarship

Applicants must be enrolled in a vocational technical school.

Amount: $300                        Deadline: March 29

 

Graduate Scholarship

Applicants must be interested in teaching special education and hold currently hold a bachelor’s degree. (Maybe you know someone who could use this—high school seniors are not qualified.)

Amount: $200                        Deadline: March 29

 

Ruby Paul Campaign Fund Scholarship

Applicants must have maintained a “B” or better average the last two semesters of high school.

                        Deadline: March 29

 

Licensed Practical Nursing Scholarship

Applicants can already be nursing students.

Amount: $400                        Deadline: March 29

 


Averyl Elaine Keriakedes Memorial Scholarship

Will be awarded, preferabley, to a female enrolled at UNL who plans to teach middle school or junior high social studies.

                        Deadline: March 29

 

Ruby Lorraine Paul Scholarship Fund

Scholarships exclude applicants enrolled in a school of nursing.

                        Deadline: March 29

 

National President’s Scholarship

Applicants must complete 50 hours of volunteer service within the community, verified in writing by the recipient organization(s).

                        Deadline: March 10

 

National Spirit of Youth Scholarship for Junior Members

Applicants must have had 3 years of junior membership in the ALA and be current members. They must also have at least a 3.0 GPA

Amount: $1000                        Deadline: March 10

 

Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students

Applicants must be a non-traditional student returning to the classroom after some period of time in which his/her formal education was interrupted; or a student who has had at least one year of college and is in need of financial assistance to pursue an undergraduate degree.

                        Deadline: March 10

 

 


SCC Distance Learning Classes – Second Semester

There are college credit classes available over distance learning. You will have to pay to take these classes, but will receive college credit that will transfer to any Nebraska college and probably apply toward a degree program. See the list on the bulletin board or come to my office to see it.
